Swamp kauri timber, also known as ancient kauri, is milled from kauri trees that have been buried and preserved in peat swamps for between 800 and 60,000 years. Some kauri were up to 2,000 years old when they fell.
Swamp kauri is a broad term applied to timber that varies in age and the way it’s been preserved. Most swamp kauri is found in Northland but some has been found as far south as Waikato. More info on Swamp Kauri
Maori used kauri timber for boat building, carving and building houses. The gum was used as a fire starter and for chewing (after it had been soaked in water and mixed with the milk of the puha plant).
The arrival of European settlers in the 1700s to 1800s saw the decimation of these magnificent forests. Sailors quickly realised the trunks of young kauri were ideal for ships’ masts and spars, and the settlers who followed felled the mature trees to yielded huge quantities of sawn timber of unsurpassed quality for building.
The gum too, became essential in the manufacture of varnishes and other resin-based products. The gum was obtained through digging, fossicking in treetops, or more drastically, by bleeding live trees.
More forest was cleared as demand for farmland and timber increased in the early and mid 20th century. More information about NZ Kauri click here.
The ring has been polished with local New Zealand beeswax. We used local beeswax from our friends at Nature Bees based on our stunning Awhitu Penninsula. If you haven’t tried their honey…it’s amazing
Please note the following:
Variation:
These rings are each handcrafted and unique: the colour and wood grain may vary from ring to ring. If you have any specific requirements please message me.
Sizing:
US sizes are available. Please note some rings are limited on sizes due to the style of ring, if only certain sizes are available to choose from this will be listed on the ring description page.
I would recommend getting your finger sized by a jeweler at different times of the day to ensure you get the right size. All rings are made to order and to your specific ring size.
If you don’t know your ring size, then I can send you a free ring sizer after you complete the purchase. or check out other ring sizing options here!
Ring Care:
It is OK to get the ring wet as it has a waterproof coating, however, the best practice is to remove the ring while showering as harsh soaps can remove the protective later on the wood over time. Wood is a natural material and needs to be treated with care and love to ensure you will have the beautiful ring for years to come.
I would recommend occasionally re-applying a beeswax-based product to your ring. I can provide our beautiful Awhitu Peninsula beeswax and mineral oil polish if required.

Packages shipped Internationally can take from 1-2 weeks, and sometimes longer depending on travel times through customs.
